Bill Gates starts this Ted talk by foreshadowing a time in his youth. When he was young his family would fill up barrels with food in preparation for a nuclear attacks and would do drills often just in case one had come. At this time in Gates youth nuclear war was the biggest concern of global catastrophe but Gates says now it isn't, instead Gates says the biggest threat to the world now is viruses. The governments around the world have invested a lot into avoiding another nuclear war but have not invested enough into avoiding a global epidemic. This fact ties up Bill Gates claim that "We're not ready for the next epidemic".
In this talk Gates brings up the Ebola virus and how if it were to get serious we would not be prepared for it. He says this because there was not any system of prevention or any plan to stop the virus if it had gotten dangerous, basically it was all last minute. There was no system of prevention, there were not any medical professionals to analyze how far the disease had spread, they had no idea what they needed, and many people had died because of that. This last minute approach costed the lives of thousands of people that (if there was preparation ) could have been saved and living to this very day. Bill Gates also talks about how luck was contributed to Ebola not spreading as vastly as it would've. If the virus had gotten into a lot more urban areas and had the capability to be airborne it would've turned into a large scale epidemic that Gates says we would not have possibly avoided because of how unprepared and unorganized we are.
In the end of this Ted talk Bill Gates raps up by saying how thanks to the constant advances in technology if an epidemic were to submerge we would not be ready for it but they're would be a most definite chance of beating it. I liked this Ted talk because it was very organized and everything Gates says flows smoothly through out this presentation. The world needs not only to focus on one big event at a time, any epidemics or threats to society should be paid attention to equally so that just in case one springs up we are better prepared and ready.
